Portrait of Sam Malik

This month, our “get to know” series once again moves beyond the walls of IPL’s offices as we introduce you to one of our partners.  This month, we sit down and talk to Sam Malik, Chief Insurance Officer at Arta Finance.

Read on to learn more about Sam and Arta Finance, how she came to her current position, what she wishes more people knew about PPLI and, of course, what she’s watching on TV these days.

Arta Finance calls itself a “digital family office for the world.”  Can you tell us a little about what that means?

Arta empowers more people to gain the financial superpowers that, until now, were only accessible by ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Traditional family offices typically hire teams of professionals to access sophisticated financial strategies, exclusive investment opportunities, or connections to insurance and lifestyle professionals. Through technology, Arta aims to bring these advantages to millions more people globally.

Founded by a team of former Google executives and researchers, Arta is a US SEC-registered investment advisor backed by Sequoia Capital India, Ribbit Capital, Coatue and more than 140 luminaries in tech and finance.

How does PPLI fit into what Arta offers its clients and how do you work with a private placement carrier like IPL?

PPLI is one of those unknown financial superpowers of the UHNW, so it fits very nicely with our proposition of making it accessible through engaging education and technological simplification.  As an insurance brokerage, we work with a variety of insurance carriers to bring their PPLI products to our customers based on their needs and suitability.  We have been partnering with IPL from our very early days and are an approved SMA investment manager with them.

What do you find fascinating about PPLI?

What I find most fascinating about PPLI is how few people that would benefit from having it in their portfolio actually know about it.

What do you wish more people knew about PPLI?

I wish more people knew that it is a vehicle not just for estate planning, but also for providing tax advantaged liquidity, when needed, for the insured or the owner.

Turning from Arta to you personally, what was the path that led you to your current position?

I have been in the insurance industry since 2000.  Most of my career has been spent on the carrier side of the business with names like MetLife, Aviva and TransAmerica.  My focus there was always at the intersection of technology and insurance, and I have been fortunate enough to work with technology partners like PingAn, Alibaba, Tencent, GRAB, PayTM, Flipkart to embed insurance in their fintech ecosystems.

As I learned more about the power of technology to significantly improve the products and user experience in insurance, I decided three years ago to take the plunge and join Arta to build the insurance business within the digital family office.
